At the heart of Ayios Nikolaos is the lagoon Lake Voulismeni that is linked to the outer harbour by a small channel. This lake forms a beautiful setting for the traditional small colourful fishing boats that line the waterfront. It is early morning and the cafés are just starting to attract their first customers of the day.

According to legend, the goddess Athena came to wash in the former sweetwater Lake Voulismeni.
