The old city of Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and many of its inhabitants often proudly quote the Irish playwright and man of letters, George Bernard Shaw, who visited the city in 1929: "If you want to see heaven on earth, come to Dubrovnik".

This panorama, from high up on the massive city walls, shows the town underneath a carpet of terracotta tiled roofs covering the many interesting shops and houses whilst the pavements are clothed in cafés and restaurants.
