Landmark Collection » One Needle

Picture of Isle of Wight Needles. This photograph was taken from the cliffs to the east of the Needles and shows the red and white lighthouse and one of the Needles. The detail of the chalk that forms the Needle can be clearly seen. There is white foam created by the waves around the Needle in an otherwise calm blue sea.

The Needles, at the western extremity of the Isle of Wight, are sea-stacks formed principally of chalk and flint.

The famous red and white Needles Lighthouse was built in 1895 and fully automated in 1994.
