Buttermere, the lake by the dairy pastures, and Crummock Water were once a single lake. Over the centuries they have become separated by a green and fertile plain which is in marked contrast to the steep fell sides and tumbling waterfalls.
Buttermere is set in a natural amphitheatre of mountains. The dramatic lighting caused by it's narrow valley can be seen in this stunning view across Buttermere towards Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks.
